California’s state capital, Sacramento was settled in 1839 by a Swiss man, John Sutter, and populated by fellow Swiss. Fort Sutter prospered as a trading post, benefiting from its location in the agriculturally rich Central Valley.
However, the town of Sacramento rapidly expanded after gold was discovered nearby in 1848. Prospectors poured into the area, launching the California Gold Rush. Because of its booming population, Sacramento was chosen as the state capital in 1854. Now it has about 400 000 citizens.
